Ahead of the start of the school year, JCPS announced that in partnership with GLI and local, state, and federal partners, they had secured funding and translated the Kentucky Certified Drivers License (CDL) exam into Spanish. A CDL is required to drive school buses as well as public transit buses and semitrucks. The process started more than a year ago in response to a growing shortage of bus drivers in Greater Louisville, and across the state, that created transportation issues for JCPS\u00a0 students.<\/p>\n
The written test is the first of two Kentucky State Police administered tests that applicants must pass to get a CDL to drive large vehicles, like a semi tractor-trailer truck or bus. The second test – a driving test – will still be given only in English and training classes are also English-only.<\/p>\n
This simple policy change will have a big impact in solving JCPS\u2019 bus driver shortage by opening up this career to non-English speaking citizens. GLI was proud to work with JCPS and Governor Beshear to secure funding for this investment to ensure \u00a0these important jobs are being filled. Public education is critical to shaping a strong future workforce, and reliable transportation directly impacts student attendance and success.<\/p>\n
